We leave Castaví, heading for the highest point in Fomentera. In order to reach Pilar de la Mola we must ascend a winding uphill road that offers us a magnificent perspective of the unique shapes of this island. Once we get to the village, we will follow a path that runs between fields of sun-kissed golden cereals, until we reach a flour mill that was one of the last to be in use in Formentera. Molí Vell, built in 1778, is a perfectly-conserved symbol of a time when fishing and agriculture were the staples of the island’s economy. This is where wheat would be milled to make bread, day after day, until it stopped girating with the force of the wind in 1964, when the first combustion motors appeared.

One of the island’s urban legends tells the story of how Bob Dylan himself lived for a while in this windmill. We don’t know if that’s actually true, but the very possibility makes our visit to Molí Vell at La Mola even more magical…
